Does UPF clothing work in water?
Yes, UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) clothing does work in water. However, it’s important to note that moisture can affect a fabric’s UPF. Dry garments are generally more protective than those same pieces once they are wet1.
UPF clothing is designed to block UV rays. For example, if you have a UV protective shirt that has a UPF50 rating, that means that only 1/50th of the sun’s UV radiation can get through the material and reach your skin.
In the context of fishing, water can reflect the sun’s rays, doubling the exposure and damage. Therefore, covering your entire body with UPF clothing is recommended.
It’s also worth noting that the effectiveness of UPF clothing can diminish over time with frequent use and washing. Some manufacturers treat their UPF fabrics with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which can start to diminish after each wash.
